Advocacy & Policy
Policy Priorities
AMCHAM advocates for policies that strengthen Malaysia’s business environment and support sustainable, long-term investment. Working through our industry committees and directly with member companies, we identify regulatory issues that affect operations and foreign direct investment, then develop practical inputs to support policy improvements.
Our member-driven priorities typically center on:
- A stronger investment climate: clear, predictable, and competitive policies that help companies invest, expand, and operate with confidence in Malaysia.
- Trade and market access: trade-related issues that affect cross-border operations, including developments that impact tariffs and supply chains.
- Industry competitiveness: especially in key sectors represented by members such as E&E (including semiconductors), healthcare, financial services, logistics, and digital technology.
- Talent and workforce readiness: human capital development, HR standards, and best practices that enable business and country growth.
- Energy transition and sustainability: policy and legal frameworks that support a competitive clean energy sector, including workstreams such as carbon capture and storage (CCS).
Government Engagement
AMCHAM works closely with the Malaysian Government through dialogues and roundtable discussions to provide information on American business investments, advise on regulatory policies, and raise issues of concern to our members.
How we engage:
- Member-informed consultations: We gather industry input through committees and one-on-one engagement, then translate it into clear policy messages.
- White papers and formal submissions: AMCHAM works with members to develop white papers and communications strategies to share with relevant officials and agencies.
- Targeted dialogues and briefings: AMCHAM participates in and convenes engagements with government leaders and agencies on issues affecting business, investment, and operations.
Partnerships That Support Advocacy
AMCHAM has a close partnership with the U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur and engages with key U.S. Government agencies in Washington, DC, including the Department of Commerce, the Department of State, and the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative.
U.S.–Malaysia Trade & Investment
AMCHAM supports a strong bilateral trade and investment relationship by gathering member insights on policy issues, promoting practical solutions, and elevating the contribution of U.S. companies operating in Malaysia. This includes sharing information that strengthens Malaysia’s competitiveness in attracting foreign investment.
Trade & investment resources:
- Economic Impact Survey (EIS): AMCHAM publishes the EIS to highlight members’ contributions, challenges, and opportunities, supporting informed dialogue on policies that grow the economy and improve the investment climate.
- Tariff and trade developments: AMCHAM curates updates through its Tariff News stream to help members track major tariff-related and trade policy changes that may affect business planning.
- Sector-based channels: Through committees such as MAEI (E&E), AMCHAM creates dialogue opportunities with the government and advocates for regulatory changes that enhance Malaysia’s business environment and competitiveness.
